Flamenco....Hola!
Sol y Sombra is a Flamenco performing troupe based in Kitchener-Waterloo. Students who have acheived a level of profiency are invited to perform with the troupe.
Sol y Sombra means Sun and Shade. It refers to the middle priced seating at a bullfight: half the time in the sun and half the time in the shade. For me, it is a metaphor for the range of emotion expressed in Flamenco.
I teach weekly classes in Kitchener, Stratford and Guelph. We welcome new students. Group classes begin each fall. Private lessons are available upon request throughout the year.
Alegrias, Bulerias, Fandangos de Huelva, Rumba, Sevillianas, Caracoles and Tangos are some of the traditional dances that are taught. As well, we perform choreographed numbers set to the music of classical and contemporary composers.

What do you need to get started in Flamenco Class?
For your first class wear comfortable clothing which allows for easy movement. A pair of short heeled shoes and a mid-length skirt, the fuller the better, is a good start. Once dancers see what practice skirts look like they can sew their own or purchase them online.
Two types of shoes are acceptable for Flamenco practice.
Character Shoes are used in many forms of dance. They have a short, sturdy heel but no nails in the toe and heel which makes the characteristic Flamenco sound. These are available at INSPIRATIONS DANCEWEAR in Kitchener starting at around $70.00. Either two or three inch heels are acceptable.
Flamenco Shoes are usually more expensive starting around $110.00. They last longer, offer more support, and have a sharper sound. Black is best. Before use, the nails in the heel and toe must be filed so they don't scratch the floor.
